As we near the completion of our scaling down process, I can’t help but reflect that I only have a few more moments like this to address you all in this forum. The last few months, as we scale down, have been quite a ride, but we are on track to meet our December deadline. Many of our staff and volunteers have left us now and have gone on to exciting new ventures.

Time flies when you’re getting ready to scale down an essential contributor to South Africa’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. As the Solidarity Fund moves closer to its new deadline of mid-December, the scaling down process remains on track and the vast majority of our interventions are completed. There is still a lot of work to be done and, as always, I am confident that the process is in the hands of a talented and passionate team.
August 2022
During the month of August, South Africa marked National Woman’s Day. While many celebrate it as little more than a public holiday, it is important to remember that this day pays tribute to all the women who marched for women’s rights in this country, and the sacrifices that they made. Like many organisations, the Solidarity Fund ran a social media campaign to mark the month. Our campaign focused on the women within the Fund who are making a difference – giving South Africa a glimpse of the truly remarkable women that I have been privileged to work with every day.
July 2022
July is, of course, the month when many in South Africa pay tribute to Nelson Mandela and the spirit of love, forgiveness, community and ubuntu that he exemplified. Love, community and ubuntu are traits that we continue to see in our Solidarity Fund partners and volunteers. Mandela once said, “Remember that hope is a powerful weapon even when all else is lost.”

What a difference a year makes. At the end of June last year, South Africa was at the height of its third Covid wave, fuelled by the deadly Delta variant. Our hospitals were packed to capacity and our medical staff pushed to their limits. Additionally, around this time in 2021, the civil unrest took place, putting additional strain on the structures of society and the economy.

As we progress with the downscaling of the Fund to be completed by the end of September, it seems that the year is speeding by. There is so much to do to ensure that the process of scaling down the Fund's operations is done responsibly and with integrity.

When the Fund announced, on the 17th of March 2022, that it would be downscaling its operations until such time that it was required to remobilise again, we never expected for that time to come so quickly.

This month marks the second anniversary since the Solidarity Fund was established. In two years, the work executed, and the impact made has been remarkable. In all that time, however, the greatest desire of all involved was for the day when the Fund would no longer be needed.

The end of the year is fast approaching. As we all make plans for the holidays, it’s natural to want to start slowing down a bit. At the Solidarity Fund, however, we aren’t slowing down just yet.

Women’s month has come to an end. As with every year, I spent some time reflecting on the role of women in society, the inequalities that we are stillfigh ting every day, and the Gender-Based Violence that continues to ravage our country.

On the 27th of June 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa upgraded the country’s lockdown from Alert Level Three, to Alert Level Four. This move was necessitated by the aggressive surge in COVID-19 infections – particularly in Gauteng, the province which has been identified as the epicentre of the third wave.

In the last few months, there have been a lot of important and exciting developments that the Solidarity Fund has been privileged to be a part of. With the National Vaccine Rollout Programme progressing into its second phase, the focus at the Fund has been on supporting the national vaccine effort in the most impactful manner possible.

I hope everyone had a peaceful Workers’ Day on Saturday. Although an international holiday, in South Africa, Workers’ Day is both a celebration of workers’ rights and a reminder of the critical role that labour organisations and unions played in the fight against Apartheid.

On the 23rd of March 2020, President Ramaphosa formally announced the establishment of the Solidarity Fund. This decisive response from the South African Government to the COVID-19 threat was nothing short of amazing and applauded by the WHO.

As the first of the COVID-19 vaccines start to arrive and be administered, many of us are breathing a sigh of relief. In the fight against this pandemic, there is no greater weapon than the vaccine. At the Fund, we support the national roll-out and are committed to playing our part as an additive to the National Health Response, standing ready to identify interventions within the mandate of the Fund that we can support.

Welcome to 2021. Who would have thought, this time last year, that we would be sitting where we are? The last year was tough and disastrous for too many. My heart and thoughts go out to all affected by this pandemic.
