Can the vaccine kill you?
Will the vaccine give me covid-19?
- By injecting you with a weakened version of the virus, your body learns how to fight off Covid-19 should it ever encounter the real thing
- You CANNOT get COVID-19 from the vaccine
- You may experience some mild side effects that will last for only a couple of days, as your body builds immunity to the virus
Can I still get covid-19 once vaccinated?
These vaccines cannot prevent you from getting infected with the COVID-19 virus, their main purpose is to reduce the severity of the disease should you contract it
- Unvaccinated people are nearly 5 times more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than vaccinated people
- Unvaccinated people are 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19
- Unvaccinated people are more than 15 times more likely to die from COVID-19
- The vaccine reduces your chance of infecting others
How was the vaccine developed so fast?
- It’s true, typically, vaccines take 10 to 15 years to develop from scratch
- However, the development of this vaccine did not only begin in January 2020
- THEY ALREADY HAD A HEADSTART
- While COVID-19 was new, there are many strains of the coronavirus that have been around for centuries
- Scientists were already developing vaccines that addressed other coronaviruses
- The science that was used to develop this vaccine first started being developed and tested nearly 15 years ago
- NO COMPROMISE IN STANDARDS
- The trials were still held to the same standards as any other vaccine development
- These vaccines were tested on a very large number of people (over 75 000 people were in the trials across multiple countries)
- Scientists came together and collaborated like never seen before to pull off this historic achievement (this is incredibly positive historic milestone)
- Because millions of people were being Infected with COVID-19, It was much quicker to test how well the vaccine works
- Over 1 billion people have now been fully vaccinated around the world (including several million in SA), so we now have data at a massive scale that proves the effectiveness of this vaccine
How effective is the vaccine?
- This vaccine Is one of the most effective we have ever produced!
- The vaccine can prevent around 70% of all Infections, even against the delta variant
- But against all variants the vaccine Is incredibly effective at preventing severe disease and death - over 90% effective!
- Over and above the reasons around speed of development
- Normally with vaccines there is a trial before it is administered to the general population. This is used to get an idea of how effective it will be when it is administered to the general population.
- YOU CAN STILL GET COVID-19, BUT:
- Unvaccinated people are 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19
- Unvaccinated people are nearly 5 times more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than vaccinated people
- Unvaccinated people are more than 15 times more likely to die from COVID-19
- Significantly reduces the chance of infecting others
- COVID-19 VACCINE IN THE REAL WORLD
- Over 1 billion people have now been fully vaccinated around the world (including several million in SA), so we now have data at a massive scale that proves the effectiveness of this vaccine
- One of the most effective vaccines in history
Are there serious side effects?
- WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
- Most side-effects are mild, and disappear in a few days - Pain at the injection site, fever, fatigue, chills, diarrhea, muscle pain
- However, most of the side effects are mild to moderate and last for a very short time
- Side effects being present in the population are normal in any vaccine (because of how many people receive it)
- Not everyone will have all, or even any of the side effects
- These effects, as well as far more severe ones are possible and for a longer period if you contract COVID-19.
- There are some serious side-effects, like blood clots and heart Inflammation. However, these are very rare, about 5 people in every million vaccinated. This Is a smaller chance than being in a serious car accident In South Africa
- UNKNOWN SIDE EFFECTS
- In the history of vaccines there has never been an unseen side effect beyond 2 months
- LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS
- To date there are no long-lasting side effects of the vaccine
- However, up to 25% of people who get the actual COVID-19 disease land up suffering “long COVID-19” and have long term effects of fatigue, headaches, body aches, dry cough etc.
Can the vaccine kill you?
- There have been no recorded deaths due to the vaccine In South Africa
- Since so many people are being vaccinated, especially elderly people, some people may die after getting the vaccine, but from other causes
- All these deaths do get rigorously Investigated
- In the US, out of 190 million people who were vaccinated, there were 3 confirmed deaths due to blood clots caused by the vaccine. In contrast, over 600 00 people have died from Covid-19 in the US.
